New York City remains to be a top tourist destination. For most, it’s a once in a lifetime travel experience. This is largely the influence of American films and media.
What draws people to the bright lights of the city?
I’ve been to New York a couple of times, and I’d jump on a chance to go back. There’s just so much to see and do here. The cliche often used to describe New York, the city that never sleeps, is so true.
Here are my top 10 reasons to visit New York City:
If I have to pick one word to describe New York City, it would have to be DIVERSE. Diverse in everything that it has to offer- its people, the food, the culture.
If you’d like to experience different cultures but don’t have the budget to travel to different countries around the world, you can just go visit New York City, USA. There you’ll see people from all over the world living their version of the American dream, but bringing with them their unique culture to America.
With so much to offer, it has something in store for everyone. Ride the subway or go to Times Square and get a glimpse of why the city is called a melting pot of cultures.
Get your culture fix at the Museum mile. New York City is home to several prominent art institutions like The Guggenheim Museum designed by master architect Frank Lloyd Wright, The Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the works of the world’s most eminent artists can be found.
The Lincoln Center showcases the best of the classical performing arts, being the home of the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, the New York City Ballet, and the New York Philharmonic.
Speaking of performing arts, New York City is also synonymous with theater, and of course we’re talking about Broadway. Would you rather watch a musical or a drama? Take a pick from a good number of plays simultaneously showing throughout the theater district. Whatever type you fancy, there’s a place in Times Square called TKTS where you can get discounted tickets for current Broadway plays.
Pop Culture and Entertainment
If you’re a fan of American movies or TV shows, it will be a thrill to go around the city hunting down familiar places from your favorite New York-city themed movies and TV shows. There’s the New York Public Library in Spiderman, Tiffany & Co. in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Empire State Building in King Kong, and many more.
The leading morning and late night shows of the US are broadcast from their NYC studios, including The Today Show, Good Morning America and Late Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Any given day, there are numerous shows ongoing for your entertainment.
New York City is a shopper’s paradise. See the advertisements of leading brands like Apple, Armani, and others in glossy magazines, and note that they have their flagship stores in the city. Walk along Fifth Avenue and see the latest collections of high end fashion houses. Line up at the Apple store for a chance to try out the latest gadgets.
But NYC is not only about high end fashion. There’s also discount designer clothes, fashion and electronics items from all over the world, plus a lot more.
New York City is a sports fan’s heaven. The city boasts of its franchise teams in different sports: the New York Knicks, the New York Mets, and the New York Yankees, among others. There are large sports arenas like the Madison Square Garden. And it’s where the sports world’s most prestigious events are held, like The New York City Marathon and The US Open (tennis).
If you love adventures in food, you could probably eat a different type of cuisine every day of the month only in New York City. Name it, whether it’s African, Asian, European or from wherever, you’ll eventually find it here.
And this is also the place where many food trends originate. The cupcake craze from a few years ago made Magnolia Bakery famous. Now people brave the long lines at Dominique Ansel Bakery for a taste of its famous cronuts.
Central Park, the green part of the city, is where you relax your senses a bit, and have a time out from the bright, blinking lights and noise of Manhattan. Aside from the huge Central Park, there are a number of small, pocket parks scattered around the city.
There’s so much history in New York City. Much of it can be gleaned in the city’s architecture. From the Victorian-style buildings and Art Deco theaters to the modern, towering glass front skyscrapers and gleaming memorials, these structures reflect the particular era’s victories and struggles.
Feel the power of corporate America in the stratospheric buildings in Manhattan that are the headquarters of some of the world’s largest companies. In the skyscrapers are the offices of fashion empires and media giants, among others. Wall Street is home to America’s most powerful financial institutions.
Those are just ten reasons, but there’s really so much more to see in New York City. A week isn’t enough to fully experience the vibrant NYC life. So go visit the city any season you like.
